Welcome to Year 1

Year 1 is the first year that children follow the National Curriculum. It is very different to the Early Years, but we still make sure there is lots of fun, creativity and enjoyment in our learning.

Throughout the year, we encourage the children to become independent workers and thinkers, taking responsibility for both their belongings and their own learning.

At our Somers Park site the class teacher is Miss Woolley.
At the Malvern Vale site the class teacher is Mrs Willis. 

For PPA time, 1HW will be taught by Mrs Button and Elm Class by Miss Hammond.

Homework Expectations

• Reading: Please read with your child every night and record it in their reading record. Ideally, aim for around 10 minutes, but please make it work for you and your child. Feel free to enjoy other books at home alongside school reading books, and try to make reading a calm and enjoyable part of your day.

• Spellings: Spellings will be sent home each Friday. The following Friday, children will practise them by writing a sentence using these words.

  • For the first half term, these will focus on red words (common exception words) that children aim to spell accurately by the end of the year.

  • After half term, spellings will include words linked to “special friends” from their phonics lessons.

  • Please practise little and often – two or three words a day works best.

  • Children need to bring in their red Home Spelling Book each Friday so new spellings can be added.

Book Change and Reading

• We will read with children individually or in small groups whenever extra adults are available.

• Please ensure your child brings their reading book and reading record every day so we can read with them when possible.

• Books will be changed on Mondays and Wednesdays.

PE

• Elm Class: Forest school is on a Tuesday and PE on Wednesday. 

• 1HW: PE on Tueday and forest school on Wednesday (first half term only)

Please send children to school wearing their PE kits on these days.
